Varcoe to play again

GEELONG speedster Travis Varcoe is still a chance to play in the Cats’ clash with Sydney this Saturday, despite injuring his foot in his comeback game last week, coach Chris Scott said this morning.

Varcoe returned to senior football, for the first time since last year’s grand final, in the Cats’ 34-point win against West Bulldogs at Kardinia Park on Sunday.

But his comeback from a chronic foot injury was over as soon as it began.

He was forced off the field in the first quarter, having caught his ankle under Bulldog Nathan Djerrkura while laying a tackle.

Scott said Varcoe was wearing a moon boot, but stressed it was only precautionary.

“We are going to be very cautious with it over the next couple of days. He’s had some preliminary scans that look quite good,” Scott said.

“It’s certainly not a recurrence of an old injury.

“Once he takes that moon boot off, we’re half expecting that he’ll be able to run without any problems.”

The Cats hoped to bring Varcoe back in the last two rounds of football to get him match ready for finals.

They also hoped his speed would be a key ingredient in taking on the Swans this week. A win would deliver Geelong a home final, while if they lose the Cats could face travelling to Perth to take on West Coast in an elimination final.

Scott allayed fears that Varcoe’s latest injury could rule him out this week and the finals.

“We were prepared to take a little bit of a risk bringing him back to get him ready for finals last week. I daresay we would be prepared to take that risk again this week if he was fit.

“We certainly haven’t ruled him out this week. He’s had a stress fracture in the bone in his foot and this (latest injury) is more the joint near that sport.

“He does have a little bit of tenderness in a slightly different spot but because he’s had a history of boney type injuries, that’s a concern at the moment.

“If he hadn’t had any issues with his foot previously, this is something we wouldn’t be worried about at all.”
