Storm causes damage

THE wild storm that hit Moree last Thursday night did quite a bit of damage.

Local resident, Wendy Baldwin, had one of her large gumtrees fall down during the storm.

“I was outside throwing fertiliser because I knew it was going to rain, when my dog started acting weird so I went and moved the car. When I got out I saw the tree fall right where I was throwing the fertiliser,” she said.

When the tree fell, it took down Ms Baldwin’s power lines as well.

“I was starting to worry and I didn’t know what to do, so I rang the SES,” Ms Baldwin said.

The SES couldn’t go out there until an electrician gave them the okay and they arrived around 10pm.

“The SES were absolutely fantastic. They were bubbly and so reassuring; they didn’t complain and they started chopping the tree down in the pouring rain,” she said.

Four crews were there to help chop down the 30-year-old gumtree.

“Because I had no power I went and stayed with my neighbours. The SES did as much as they could and re assured me that they would be back in the morning to chop down and remove the rest of the tree,” Ms Baldwin said.

“The local SES are a credit to themselves and to our community. I will be forever grateful for their impressive efforts,” she said.

Meanwhile, Shirley Goater was also impacted by falling trees.

Mrs Goater was at her daughter, Anne Marie’s, house when they heard a loud noise.

“A branch from a tree fell down in the storm onto my daughter’s car in Tycannah Street. It wasn’t terribly bad but she will have to claim it on insurance,” Mrs Goater said.

When she arrived back home she also saw that more trees had fallen across from her house.

“The SES was there cleaning everything up as quickly as they could,” she said.
