The Shire Donor Centre at Miranda is asking those people not going away to donate this weekend.

An Australian Red Cross Blood Service volunteer of three years, Helma Mulhall, has done her part, donating for the 100th time this week.

Centre manager John Bain said one hour of people’s time donating blood this Easter could mean a lifetime to the person who receives it.

“One way of giving the gift of Easter is to give blood,” Mr Bain said.

“One in three of us need blood in our lifetime yet only one in 30 donate.”

There is a desperate need for the donation of the blood product platelets, which are used to help treat cancer patients.

Platelets have a shelf life of five days.

“It can take blood donations from up to four people to make one dose of life-saving platelets and during the holiday season stocks can drop to critical levels quickly.”
