Second candidates’ forum

Candidates for Forbes Shire Council at next month’s Local Government Elections will have another opportunity to make their point at this week’s Forbes Business Chamber ‘Meet the Candidates’ forum.

Like last week’s Forbes Independent Business Association (FIBAI) forum, each candidate has been invited to outline their policies in a short speech to the audience, before the chair calls for questions from the floor.

Forbes Business Chamber secretary Marg Duggan yesterday said 13 of the 14 candidates for the September 8 election had indicated they would attend the forum, to start at 6pm on Thursday at the Forbes Services Club function room.

Current Councillor Ron Penny will not be in Forbes on Thursday but has provided the chamber with his speech, which will be read to the audience.

Forbes Business Chamber secretary Marg Duggan encouraged voters to take advantage of the opportunity to hear from all candidates, even if they were among the crowd at last week’s FIBAI event.

“We certainly don’t want it to be seen as ‘us and them’ with the FIBAI meeting last Thursday, but I think it’s a second opportunity for candidates and also a second opportunity for the community to come along, listen to them speak and then if they want, ask some questions of the candidates,” Mrs Duggan said.

“I think it’s also a second opportunity for the candidates, if they have something they want to tell us that is important, or maybe they didn’t have time last week,” Mrs Duggan said.

Mrs Duggan stressed that each candidate would have only three minutes to give their speech, not five minutes as was inadvertently advertised last week.
