Mandatory terms

THE Police Association’s pushfor mandatory minimum sentences of 12 months’ jail for people convicted ofassaulting police or an emergency service worker is justified. Associationpresident Randolph Wierenga has every good reason in describing the apologyletter handed down recently as punishment by the courts for assaulting a policeofficer as pathetic. Like all other work environments, police and emergencypersonnel should be safe, and those who deliberately inflict injury throughaggression should be dealt with in a manner sending a clear message that thissort of behaviour is unacceptable. An apology in writing has its merits butdoesn’t “cut the mustard” as a suitable deterrent.
