New park should be tourist magnet

Ahead of a community celebration on May 5, National Parks and Wildlife Service will host two activities as part of its Discovery program (below right).

Environment Minister Robyn Parker believes many people will arrange their own bushwalks of the area, which features significant Aboriginal sites, waterfalls, upland swamps, sandstone gorges and swimming holes.

The best access point for St George and Sutherland Shire residents is Darkes Forest Road off the Princes Highway at Darkes Forest.

There is a walking trail to a viewing platform of spectacular Maddens Falls. The two-kilometre return trip, over an easy grade, takes about 45 minutes.

No picnic or toilet facilities are available in the park at this stage.

The government will release plans soon for proposed facilities costing $1 million and will invite public comment.

Before its gazettal as a state recreation area and nature reserve in 1996, the region was managed as a water catchment area by Sydney Water.
