In many cases, the wait is 10 years or more.

The waiting times were revealed in figures released for the first time by the state government.

Minister for Family and Community Services Pru Goward said the data, which would be updated each year, would enable applicants to make more informed choices about their housing and living options.

“This gives them the opportunity to manage their own lives instead of sitting on the never-never,” she told Parliament.

As at last October, 56,056 people were on the NSW housing waiting list.

In St George, the expected waiting time for studio and one-bedroom units was five to 10 years. For two-, three- and four bedroom homes, the wait was 10 or more years.

In Sutherland Shire, the waiting time for homes was five to 10 years while four-bedroom units was 10 or more years.
