ANOTHER stage of the Discovery Point development at Wolli Creek will go ahead after the NSW government approved a retail component, including a shopping centre residents have long lobbied for.

The $52.7 million development adjacent to Wolli Creek railway station will include two mixed use high-rise buildings with 130 apartments and basement parking.

It is one of 14 buildings that comprise the concept plan for Discovery Point.

An application for another 13-storey building with 88 units as part of stage two of the project is still being assessed by NSW Planning and Infrastructure.

Further development applications concerning Discovery Point will be determined by Rockdale Council after changes in planning laws last year.

The current application also includes a new neighbourhood park, roof top courtyard with a gym, community room and a water recycling plant.

A supermarket and other retail shops will be situated on the ground floor fronting a newly created road — Discovery Point Place — and Brodie Spark Drive.

There will also be a new neighbourhood park and pedestrian pathways linking Wolli Creek station to Magdalene Terrace via the park.

Developers Australand Holdings Limited and Landcom said in reports submitted to NSW Planning and Infrastructure that they hope the park would act as a “village centre”, attracting residents for shopping and recreation and improving links between the developments along Magdalene Terrace to the railway station.

New roads, including Spark Lane south and Discovery Point Place, will be serviced by a bus stop, while Brodie Spark Drive will be extended north towards Cooks River.

A temporary pedestrian access to Wolli Creek station will be built for the construction period. Road works to the north of the station will provide bus access to Wolli Creek station and a temporary bus stop will be placed along Brodie Spark Drive.

No public submissions have been received so far. The consultation process will continue until August 27.
