Is there anybody out there?

http://broelman南京夜网.au/THE Southern Highlands tourism industry might still be growing, but as far as a government-established Visitor Economy Taskforce is concerned, it doesn’t exist at all.

The taskforce was charged with investigating ways to double overnight visitor expenditure to NSW by 2020 and presented its report to Tourism Minister George Souris in early June.

The report states that, “An extensive stakeholder engagement program was key to the taskforce’s approach to ensure that the taskforce had the benefit of views and ideas from specially convened industry advisory groups, peak industry associations, public submissions, a program of public meetings and an online forum for public comment”.

Tourism Southern Highlands tourism manager Steve Rosa was a part of that stakeholder engagement yet, despite the report’s authors stating, “There is a significant opportunity to use NSW food, wine and dining to enhance the image, appeal and experience of many regional areas”, no mention is made of the Southern Highlands.

Visit the website of Destination NSW, the lead government agency for the NSW tourism and major events sectors and, similarly, you’ll find no mention of the Southern Highlands as a regional tourist destination.

One wonders what must be done for our region to receive/deserve recognition from the NSW government and its departments.

We are a closer food and wine destination from Sydney than any of the other wine regions, we have significant festivals such as Brigadoon and Tulip Time, we have a strong arts sector promoted by dozens of galleries, and we have magnificent attractions such as The International Cricket Hall of Fame.

Tourism Minister George Souris said the government was determined to rebuild the NSW economy by supporting tourism, business and major events.

Not in the Highlands it seems.

How did that Pink Floyd song go? “Hello? Is there anybody out there? Can anybody hear me?”

Perhaps this is a job for Pru Goward?
