Monarto Lutheran outplay Salem

MONARTO Lutheran after their narrow second semi-final loss swept into the Combined Churches Indoor Bowls Association Alf Rawlins Shield grand final this Friday with a huge 10-121 to 2-89 preliminary final win over Salem Lutheran.

The match however was a little closer than the final score suggests as Monarto won 65 ends, lost 54 and drew one.

Starting the preliminary final in fine style Monarto won five of the six round one games for a match winning lead of 5-64 to 1-43.

The only Monarto first round loss was a narrow one with Richard Hein and Yvonne Mills going down to Salem pair Chris Thomson and David Klemm 9-8.

A close look at the score sheet suggests this game could well have been a draw.

The only other winning Salem pair was Roger Farley and Katrina Klemm who gained a big early lead and hung on to win their second round game 13-10 over Wayne Day and Haydn Hein.

Four Monarto pairs won both their games.

Joy and Keith Paech defeated Farley and Klemm 10-8 and with a five on one end followed with 7-5 second round win over Valda Jaensch and Margaret Morris.

Max Paech and Penne Lewis-Brown won seven ends in defeating Alan McNicol and Merv Joppich 13-6.

In their round two game Paech and Lewis Brown had a comfortable 10-3 win over Thomson and Klemm.

Terry Critchley who said he was not bowling well was paired with Chris Law.

Although failing to score on the last three ends this pair defeated Shane and Jayden Thomson 12-8 and then snuck home in round two defeating Murray Grosser and Meredith Walters 8-7.

The fourth two game wining pair was Ian Pumpa and long time bowler Eric Frahn. In round one they had a runaway 14-7 over Grosser and Walters. A four on the ninth end enabled them to win their second round game 10-9 against the Thomson brothers.

Day and Hein won their first round game for Monarto defeating Jaensch and Morris 7-5.

Monarto pair Hein and Mills won their second round game defeating McNicol and Joppich 12-9.
