McDonald, a Cronulla fan, had his leg amputated and is having treatment.

As part of a fund-raiser the Sharks offered McDonald a signed jersey to auction off on Tuesday night.

Co-owner of Pacfit Bootcamps Husky Abdallah purchased the jersey but donated it back to McDonald.

“He was ecstatic and very thankful,” Abdallah said. “He is a good kid.”

As part of Abdallah’s work, he comes across inspirational stories on a daily basis but none matched that of McDonald’s.

“Every day I train people who are fighting to maintain good health and fitness,” Adballah said.

“Here is a kid fighting for his life.

“His fight is a lot greater than anyone else’s and it is inspirational.

“Too many people make an excuse to not get out and be healthy.”

Ross spoke about his own hardships when a neck injury almost saw him retire from the game following the opening game of 2009.

“He spoke about his setbacks,” Abdallah said. “Obviously, Scott’s are far more serious but Ben spoke about spending time in a wheelchair and learning how to walk again.”

The night doubled as the opening of the Telstra Business Centre at Miranda.
