High river flows expected

SOUTH Australians have beenwarned to expect strong flows in theRiver Murray, as upstream rainsboost inflows into the river system.

A High Flow Advice statementissued by the Department ofEnvironment, Water and NaturalResources on Friday said flows at theSouth Australian-Victorian borderwere expected to increase to about45,000 megalitres per day due tohigh inflows in the Lower Darling,Murrumbidgee, Upper Murray andGoulburn rivers.

While there is no immediate riskof flooding in South Australia, theinflows are expected to raise riverlevels as the water makes its waydownstream.

Overbank flows are triggered atabout 40,000ML/day, however, thedepartment has advised the risk ofinundation was expected to be minimal.

People using the river have beenwarned to take precautions againstthe high flow.

The department has warned peoplenot to walk, drive or ride throughfloodwaters or flood affected causewaysor roads.

It said people should be aware ofsignificant debris being carrieddownstream and of submergedobstacles when operating boats onfloodplains near inundated riverbanks.

People have also been warned tocamp away from the river bank andto always wear flotation deviceswhile in the river.
