Dumped for speaking out about west Menai development.

GANDANGARA Local Aboriginal Land Council has suspended dissident member Sue Clegg for three years over her submission to NSW Planning and Infrastructure opposing the land council’s $1 billion west Menai development.

Ms Clegg, who guessed she had been a member of the land council for 20 years, attended the members-only meeting to discuss her suspension last Wednesday night.

She said the land council’s chief executive Jack Johnson told the meeting her submission might have turned the government against the development project and, as such, was detrimental to the interests of the land council.

Copies of her submission to the planning department were handed out at the meeting, Ms Clegg said.

She vowed to continue to speak out against the project. “My opinion is my opinion. If I believe it I’m going to speak up,” she said.

Mr Johnson did not respond to questions about the reasons for Ms Clegg’s suspension and refused to comment on her recollections of what he said at the land council meeting. However, he confirmed a member was suspended.

“. . . Gandangara can confirm that a meeting of members on Wednesday evening suspended a member for three years,” Mr Johnson said in a written statement.

He said the suspension was approved by a 66 per cent majority vote and conducted in accordance with the Aboriginal Land Rights Act.

In her submission to NSW Planning and Infrastructure, she called the land council’s proposed development at west Menai “appalling”.

She said she opposed the development for a range of reasons, including the fact it was in an area where an elder’s ashes had been scattered. Ms Clegg also expressed concern for the plants and animals at the site and said she would prefer the area to remain undeveloped so it could be used to teach children about Aboriginal culture and heritage. She said the land council board saw “only dollar signs” when it came to west Menai and few Aborigines would benefit from the development.
