The tragic death of young Sunshine Coast competitor Matthew Barclay last week and the cancellation of some events dampened the remainder of the five-day open carnival, with a special tribute offered after the carnival competition was moved away from Kurrawa beach.

But it was the wish of Matthew’s family that the carnival go ahead.

The fully professional Queensland clubs led by defending champion, Northcliffe, continued their dominance, with Northcliffe easily winning the club point score for a record eighth consecutive year.

The maroon-and-whites finished on a bumper 318, well clear of a pack of clubs led by Kurrawa on 163.5, Manly 161, Terrigal 159, Mooloolaba 142, North Cronulla 137, Maroochydore 132, Wanda 128, Noosa Heads 122 and Alexandra Headland 113.

Cronulla (86) and Currumbin Beach (85.5) finished just outside the top 10. Elouera finished 44th.
