Organiser Maurice Farrell said there was a growing gay and lesbian community in St George and the event was to highlight their presence.

The event was being organised to encourage ideas about building a “vibrant, visible and viable” community in St George, Mr Farrell said.

He said data from community consultations with councils showed there was an increasing population in Rockdale and Canterbury.

“While there was a youth group to support gay and lesbian people in the area, we haven’t had a social or support network for adults,” Mr Farrell said.

“It’s about an alternative, so people who are gay do not feel they have to go to ‘gay ghettos’ like Newtown or Oxford Street to socialise,” he said.

“Why aren’t we catching up at bowls clubs?

“We live in the suburbs.

“For people their cultural or ethnic background has made it hard for them to come out, but to be around other people who are going through what you are going through can help.”
