Grand final looms for third, fourth grades

Picture: John VeageSUTHERLAND still have two teams in the premiership race after their third and fourth grade sides won comprehensive victories to progress into the final as the Sydney Grade Cricket competition ends this weekend.

In third grade, Sutherland faced Manly-Warringah at Glenn McGrath Oval, Caringbah.

They set a mammoth 396 with century-maker Grant Davies (164) a stand-out, and with Josh Zywietz (59 not out), being the main contributors.

Manly made solid progress in reply but were dismissed for 288 in the two day match.

Opening bowler Matt Manton (5-46) led the attack while Nathan Whittingham took two wickets.

Sutherland hosted Northern District at Sutherland Oval in the fourth grade fixture. Batting first Sutherland were bowled out for 248 in the 91st over, with Ryan Chivers (64 not out) and David Mifsud (51) starring with the bat. Northern District struggled in reply dismissed for 164 with Pat Burns (4-37) the main destroyer. Sutherland’s fifth grade were eliminated after losing to Gordon.

In women’s cricket, St George-Sutherland Slayers lost the first grade women’s grand final by 108 runs against Bankstown Sports on Sunday. The win was Bankstown’s fifth consecutive title.

The Slayers second grade won their sixth consecutive title.

The third grade team won, too.

Sutherland fixtures Saturday and Sunday:

¦ Third grade: v Sydney at Blacktown International Sports Park 2.

¦ Fourth grade: v Manly-Warringah at Waverley Oval.
