The Mid North CoastBush Fire Management Committee has declared the starting date to the statutoryBush Fire Danger Period (BFDP).

From Saturday,September 1 any person wishing to light a fire in the the Local Council areasof Coffs Harbour and Bellingen will require afire permit. During a Total Fire Ban however, no fires of any kind may be liteven if you hold a permit.

“Commencementof the Bush Fire Danger Period does not prohibit landholders from burning andcarrying out hazard reduction. In fact, we continue to encourage properlyprepared and managed hazard reductions. It does mean however, that permits willbe required for lighting fires,” said Rural Fire Service Inspector RonCollingridge.

Fires have already been reported in parts of Bellingen shire as the mercury rises fanned by strong winds.
