Competitions continued with the year seven and eight commencing their formal debating program against Tenterfield last Friday.

As part of their preparations the team attended the regional debate camp in Tamworth.

Team members are Declan Drake, Ebony Luxford, Ashleigh Campbell, Jessie Ryder, Hannah Dean, Hugh Worsley and Sarah Waleson.

Year nine and 10 students teams successfully won their zone defeating Glen Innes and Bundarra.

They then went on to defeat both Duval High School from Armidale and Oxley High School from Tamworth in a unanimous decision from the Arts Unit’s panel of judges.

Now the team is preparing to enter the interregional finals via a video conferencing against Byron Bay High School in the Inter-regional Comp-etition on Friday.

Inverell High teacher Julie Drake said this is highly commendable, as they are now in the top 20 teams in the state from an original field of close to 300.

“Matilda Witherdin-Costigan, Hannah Worsley, Ebony Adams and Brooke McLennan are the members of the year nine and 10 team and in the past Abby Fittler has also played a part and the team is coached by Karen Witherdin,” Mrs Drake said.

“We’re hoping for a win against Byron Bay, they’re preparing very well so hopefully we’ll have a win.

“The debates are really high order debates and we don’t video conference all that often, it’s to cut down on travel.”

WINNING THE ARGUMENT: The Inverell High School debating team Hannah Worsley, Matilda Witherdin-Costigan, Brooke McLennan and Ebony Adams.
